Pinto Horses - Colors
The main characteristic of Pinto Horses is the dual-colored coat pattern comprised of white areas and combined with any other of the basic colors. So each Pinto Horse is unique. There are two recognized Pinto color patterns:
- Tobiano is white with large non-symmetrical spots of color, often overlapping. Spots originate from the head, neck, flank, and buttock, often including the tail. Legs are usually white, tail and mane are always white. Tobiano gene dominates any other solid color.
- Overo is a colored horse with jagged white markings, originating on the side or belly, and spreading towards the neck, legs, and back. This type has dark tail, mane, legs, back-line, and bald or white face.
They may also be solid colored (bay, black, brown, chestnut, gray, palomino, and etc) or have patterns. The color requirement is based on the age of the horse. The ideal Pinto Horse possesses a 50/50 distribution of color and white markings, but acceptable patterns range from predominantly white to predominantly dark. All eye colors are acceptable. Pinto Horses crossed with Arabians are called Pintabians and are considered to be very rare and valuable.
